The workHomepage

There are three lines of work: work on oneself, work in relation to others, and work in connection with the work itself and oneself in relation with the work.

Unless a person works on oneself, the second line of work continues being theoretical and imaginary. The work on oneself brings together everything this work practically teaches and is a necessary starting point. The work on oneself helps us to understand how it is possible to live more consciously regarding daily issues. In general, we are continuously identified. Life conquers us throughout the day and it extracts all the conscious force in us. It is necessary to discover something in us, which will prevent this happening, that is to say, that the events of our existence extract all the force in us by identification and internal consideration..

This work says that, due to our mechanical way of life, the energy is extracted from us by the negative states, worries, anxiety and by all forms of identification. For this reason this teaching says that we must remember ourselves, stopping the loss of energy in this way. We do the most stupid things as if they had enormous importance and we suffer the illness of the humanity that is asleep, identification. Gurdjieff says that it is the worse illness of this planet and that when a person is identified, he is asleep, in a state of hypnosis.

One of the main ideas that Gurdjieff introduces to us is that the human being is able to wake up by the act of self-remembering. This act produces a shock, the first conscious shock. It is by this shock that we separate ourselves from the hypnotic dream of humanity on Earth. This is the heart of the Gurdjieff´s teaching, but all the other ideas that this work introduces are important as well: self-observation, work with negative emotions, the sincerity with oneself, the internal consideration, the theory of buffers, imagination, etc.

The first conscious shock or self-remembering has to do with the way we receive impressions which reach us. Gurdjieff says that the human being has three types of food: ordinary food, the food of the air and the one of impressions. The work teaches us that to the human machine a mechanical shock occurs through breathing and that it is possible to give it another shock, which is not mechanic. It is called the first conscious shock and this shock is what distinguishes the sleeping human being, immersed in life, dominated by influences, from the human being who is beginning to wake up. The human machine can live without this conscious shock. Then it only serves the aim of organic life, the aim of nature. It is said that the human being has been created as an organism able to self-develop, able to not to only fulfill the aim of nature, but also another order of laws. However, this action is only possible through conscious effort in the work.
